Hannibal Phillips, Farnam Pionoeer Dies
Hannibal Phillips, pioneer resident of Farnam passed away Friday evening, Oct. 7, 1938, following a slight stroke early that morning, at Haxtun, Colo., where he has made his home for several years.
He had been failing in health but lately had seemed to be much better, and was planning to go fishing that day with his son at the Jumbo reservoir twenty-five miles from their home.
Mr. Phillips would have been 87 years old if he would have lived until Oct. 10. His funeral was held on that date at Haxtun.
Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were married Nov. 4, 1873. They celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary, and for two more years were privileged to journey through life together, this companionship was broken by the death of Mrs. Phillips on Sept. 4, 1924.
To this union eight children were born, seven of whom are living, and were all present at the funeral. They are Freeland Phillips, North Platte; Mrs. (Alice) Jess Fitch, Hershey; Jessie Phillips, Dickens; Mrs. (Goldie) Chas. Decker, Haxtun, Colo.; Chester Phillips, Haxtun, Colo.; Mrs. (Lily) McIntyre, Denver, Colo.; and Mrs. (Bernice) Jones of Montana, besides several grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Phillips moved to this community from Nemaha county, Nebr., in May 1884, before Farnam was located, and filed on a homestead and timber claim, where they suffered the many hardships which the pioneers endured in establishing their homes. They moved to Haxtun, a few years prior to the death of Mrs. Phillips.
C. E. and G. W. Pollard received word of his death. Their grandfather, J. C. Kitchen was a close relative of Mr. Phillips.
