Obituary Collection
Horace C. Hertel

A graveside service for Horace C. Hertel of Forest Grove, a retired pharmacist, will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in The Dalles.

Mr. Hertel died of cancer Thursday in his home. He was 67.

He was born Oct. 1, 1922, in Berlin, Germany. He moved with his family to Portland in 1926, then to The Dalles where he grew up. He earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy at Oregon State College, now OSU.

Mr. Hertel joined the U.S. Navy and served as a hospital corpsman on the battleship USS Maryland during World War II.

He married Carol Rice on Jan. 9, 1955, in The Dalles. They lived in Hood River until 1958, when they moved to Vernonia, where he owned and operated the Vernonia Drug Store.

The Hertels moved to Forest Grove in 1971. Mr. Hertel worked at Hank's Super Center Pharmacy for several years and started the Progress Drug Store, which he ran for a year before retiring in 1982.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Mark of Hillsboro; daughter, Diane Edwards of Denver; brother, Gerhard of Dufur; father, Max Trinkhaus of Portland; and two grandchildren. A daughter, Rhonda Hertel, died in 1958.

The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society.
