Obituary Collection
Clovis Witte

MADISON - Clovis Witte, 90, of Madison, formerly of Gothenburg, died Jan. 20, 2005, at Countryside Home in Madison, where she had been a resident for the past four months.

She was born April 7, 1914, to Harry L. and Carrie C. Couse Schriver at Maxwell. She was the baby girl, spoiled by two brothers and two sisters. She grew up in Maxwell on the ranch and then in Gothenburg, where she attended school. She graduated with the Gothenburg High School in 1932.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, Girls Athletic Association, Campfire Girls, Epworth League and the United Methodist Church. She attended the Nebraska Wesleyan University where she was a member of the Theta Upsilon and received her bachelor's degree and teaching certificate in 1936. She spent the next years in the classroom teaching in Ingham, Elwood, Scottsbluff, Farnam, Maxwell and Gothenburg. She also was a principal in Scottsbluff before returning home to help care for her father and to work at the Gothenburg State Bank.

On June 8, 1947, she married Otto. H. Witte at the Methodist parsonage in Gothenburg, and they had three children, Beverly, Linda and Robert.

Mrs. Witte continued to work writing checks at Stickelman's Livestock each sale day and being involved in the activities of the United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Theta Rho, and Extension Club. She was a Girl Scout leader, 4-H Mom and athletic fan for the children and then the grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, quilting, crafts and was always ready to play cards with Dad and friends. Although not particularly musically accomplished, she appreciated and supported the arts. Her fondest memories were of the ranch, camping, nature and time spent with her father. She was always a willing babysitter and hostess. She was a caregiver for her sisters and mother. Love of family and the value of children were taught in her home. She will be greatly missed. She is the last of the generation with only two Witte children living. The angels have a beautiful princess among them tonight.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly (Kim) Anderson of Stanton and Linda (Mike Horn) Witte of Livonia, N.Y.; a son, Robert (Shelley) Witte of Lincoln; six grandchildren, Cara and Ryan Anderson, Toby and Nathan Horn, Brandy and Casie Witte; a great-grandson, Dawson Broeker; and nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Otto on Jan. 5, 1994; two sisters Martha Schriver and Ruth McNatton; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry P. (Tillie) Schriver and Kenneth (Betty) Schriver.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Gothenburg.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Janie Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
