A telegram received from the war department by Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Brown last Thursday stated that their son, marine private first class Marion E. Brown, had died of wounds received on Iwo Jima island February 20. The report also stated that he was buried at sea.

A memorial service will be held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock for Marion Brown, U. S. marine who recently lost his life in overseas service.

Marion Brown Memorial

Memorial services were held at the Methodist church Sunday for Marion Brown who lost his life February 20 while serving with the marines on Iwo Jima island.

The service was sponsored by the American Legion, and in addition to the sermon by Rev. Tipton, there was prayer, scripture reading, music, a tribute by Mrs. Fred Rowland and taps by Gerald Thompson.

Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Brown have received a certificate from the navy department stating that the Purple Heart has been awarded to their son, Pfc Marion E. Brown, U. S. marine corps reserve, for military merit and for wounds received in action resulting in his death on February 20, 1945. They are also advised that he is entitled to the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal for his service in that area, which will arrive later. Mrs. Brown also received a Mother’s Day card from Eugene Lewis, buddy of Marion, who is still in overseas service.

Posthumous Awards

Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Brown have just received from the department of war two posthumous awards for extraordinary heroism in action during the seizure of enemy Japanese held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, February 19 to 28, 1945, of their son, the late Private First Class Marion E. Brown, U.S. marine corps reserve.

One award is a copy of presidential unit citation with ribbon bar and one star, awarded the Assault troops, Fifth amphibious corps, and the other is the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal.
