Carl Ivan Brown
Carl I. Brown, 80, died at home on Monday, February 16, 2009. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, February 20 at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel. Burial will be at Rising Sun Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Carl was born in Kimball, NE on July 28, 1928 to Marion and Lillie (Stephens) Brown. He moved to Des Moines in 1949 following two years of service in Japan for the U.S. Army. He worked for 23 years as a clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Des Moines. He was a member of the Eastgate Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Za Ga Zig Shrine.
Carl enjoyed his retirement and spent much of his time puttering in the garage and around the yard. Much to the delight of family, friends and neighbors he decorated the outside of his home for each holiday season. The displays brightened a corner of his neighborhood and lifted many spirits.
Carl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris Brown; two sons, Carl "Shorty" (Stephanie) Brown and Tim (Linda) Brown of Des Moines; daughter, April (Pat) Hurley of Pleasant Hill; six grandchildren, Tracy Starr, Aaron Brown, Christopher Brown, Benjamin Hurley, Kate Hurley and Drew Hurley; four great grandchildren; four brothers, Robert, Kenneth, Thomas and Vernon; and three sisters, Lillian Dishman, Rose Kostman and Juanita Lynch. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marion; and sister, Dorothy Rinke. .
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital For Children.
