Obituary Collection
Hannah Amstutz Surfus Wharton

Hannah Amstutz, daughter of John and Marie Amstutz, was born April 21, 1876, near Leo, Indiana, and passed away December 6, 1949 at the age of seventy-three years, seven months, and fifteen days.

She was the youngest of eight children. Her parents, five sisters and a brother preceded her in death. One brother, John, is living in Grabill, Indiana.

Her early years were spent in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. On January 18, 1913 at Geneva, Illinois she was united in marriage with W. E. Wharton. They came to their farm home south of Farnam where they lived for years. From there they moved into Farnam, where Mr. Wharton passed away on November 9, 1945.

Since that time she sold her home here and has spent three years traveling and visiting among friends and relatives. Her health failed a year ago, so the past year has been spent at Murray, Kentucky, with her daughter Naomi and at Aurora, Illinois, near her daughter, Martha.

At an early age she became a member of the Methodist Church. When health permitted she was active in church work and other worth while activities. Her many friendly calls and beautiful bouquets of glads and lilacs will long be remembered. She loved her home, her Bible, pets, flowers, and interesting scrapbook hobby. Her influence of good will remain with us.

She leaves four daughters, Mrs. Naomi Farris of Murray, Kentucky, Mrs. Bessie Vig of Chico, California; Mrs. Florence Greenlee of Jessup, Iowa, and Mrs. Martha Block of Elgin, Illinois; two step-children, Miss Helen Wharton of Lincoln, Nebraska and Harold Wharton of Gering, Nebraska; five grandchildren and one step-grandaughter.

The body was brought from Illinois to the Hugo McVay funeral home at Gothenburg and Friday afternooon services were held at the Farnam Methodist Church with Rev. McCaig officiating, assisted by Rev. Compton and Rev. Tanner. Burial was in the Farnam Cemetery.

The Farnam Press, Farnam, Dawson County, Nebraska. 15 December 1949.
