Obituary Collection
Marcellus Mackey

Marcellus Mackey, 56, youngest (sic) son of Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Mackey, one of the oldest and best known pioneer families of Boone county, passed away at his home at Eustis, Nebraska, early Monday morning. He had been ill but a short time and death was unexpected and came as a great shock to his relatives and friends here. Mr. Mackey visited here only a few weeks ago and then seemed to be the best of health. The remains were brought to Boone, arriving here Tuesday noon and were taken to the Welin undertaking parlors where they were viewed by many of his old time friends. Wednesday afternoon the funeral was held at 2:00 o’clock from the Methodist church at Mackey, conducted by the Rev. Munneke, of this city, and attended by hundreds of relatives and old time friends and neighbors. Many beautiful floral tributes both from his Nebraska home and from friends here, attested the general esteem in which he was held. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Mackey. Marcellus Mackey was born in the old Mackey homestead near Mackey Grove, in Harrison township, Boone county, Iowa, January 16, 1857, making him in his fifty seventh year at the time of his death. He grew to young manhood there and January 9, 1882, was united in marriage with Miss Viola Clark. The young couple went immediately to Orleans, Nebraska, but one year later established their home on a farm near Eustis, Nebraska, where they have since resided. As his father had here in the early days, Mr. Mackey soon became one of the foremost citizens of that new country. He was not only a farmer, but was extensively engaged in the raising, buying and shipping of stock and grain and the town and community owes much of its growth and prosperity to his business acumen and untiring energy. His sudden taking away is a severe blow to the community in which he has lived and labored so long.

Mr. Mackey is survived by his widow, four sons Ray of New Raymer, Colorado; Wilbur, principal of the schools at Lake City, Nebraska, and Harold and Glenn at home, and one daughter, Ethel Avis [Mrs. Joseph Greenwood], a student at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, his aged mother, Mrs. Sebastian Mackey, who still makes her home on the old homestead, four brothers, Sebastian, Edward, George and John, and two sisters, Mrs. A.C. Johnston and Mrs. August Stoll, all of whom were present at the funeral The family is given the deep sympathy of the entire community in their deep sorrow.
