Obituary Collection
Jacob Reed

Jacob Reed, Early Day Resident, Died Friday.

Jacob Reed, 84 years old, and for over 35 years a resident of the Platte Valley, passed away at his home in Saratoga, late last Friday evening, October 22. Advancing age, with accompanying ills, caused his demise. Mr. Reed had been quite ill for several weeks, but two weeks ago had shown considerable improvement and hopes were held that he would make a complete recovery. However, his condition again turned for the worse, and he passed away about 10 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Reed was born in Woodhull, Michigan, April 19, 1853. He spent his boyhood in that state. Shortly after reaching his 18th birthday, on July 9, 1871, Mr. Reed was married, taking as his bride Miss Caroline Abel. Mr. Reed and his bride moved from Michigan to Nebraska, and became the parents of three children, Cordelia A., Albert W., and Limon A. Reed. The youngest son, Limon, lived to be only three years of age, and the other son, Albert, passed away in May 1920. The daughter, now Mrs. Ernest McKinney, makes her home in Laramie.

After a few years in Nebraska, Mr. Reed decided to move to Wyoming, and with his family left Farnum (sic) in that state, in June, 1900. The trip was made with horses, and the Reeds arrived in Saratoga, July 1, of that year. A lot was purchased and a new house erected in the south part of town, which is still the family home. On arrival to this section, Mr. Reed entered the freighting business, hauling from the Union Pacific through Saratoga to Encampment. He continued in this work until some time after the building of the S & E Railroad into the valley. Then, although disposing of much of his freighting equipment, he continued in the teaming business, and for many years contracted haying work on local ranches and hauled many tons of coal from mines down the river. He retired from active business several years ago, and had enjoyed a comparatively restful life up until his illness and death. Mr. and Mrs. Reed celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in July of this year.

Jacob Reed is survived by his wife; his daughter, Mrs. Ernest McKinney; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Community Church, Rev. Arthur Campbell conducting the services. Interment was in the Saratoga Cemetery
