Obituary Collection
Max Osborn

Max Osborn was born August 16, 1921 in Torrington, Wyoming to Paul and Lena Osborn. From Wyoming, his family moved to Colorado and later to Nebraska where he graduated from Farnam High School in 1939. During World War II, he enlisted in the Marines and served in the Pacific theater. Max was present when the flag was raised atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. When the war ended, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and graduated in 1949 with a degree in education. While there, he was a three–season, four–year letterman in football, basketball, and track.

Max realized that he had made the right career choice when he began his first teaching and coaching position at Brighton High School. He was hired at Alameda High School at 1951, and his heart has been with that community of colleagues and former students ever since.

While a college student at Kearney he met an attractive freshman named Beverly Tabor and gallantly carried her over a deep snow drift. Providentially, their paths crossed again at Alameda when Beverly was hired as an English teacher in 1951. After a few years on the teaching staff together, Max proposed marriage. They were married on June 12, 1954 at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church in east Denver. Their union strengthened their ties with the Alameda family and produced two children and three grandchildren.

Beverly was freshman class sponsor and Max was a popular teacher in the business department, teaching typing, bookkeeping, and office occupations. He was the head football coach there and led the Pirates to a victory in the state championship in 1958, the school’s only state football championship to date. Along with football, he was on the coaching staff of the basketball and baseball teams and directed theatre productions.

Max left Alameda High School to be become an administrator of vocational programs for Jefferson County Schools. He enjoyed working with principals, teachers, and the staff of Warren Technical School until his retirement in 1983. Shortly thereafter, Max began a second career in Jeffco heading up the newly established Dropout Prevention and Recovery Program. He and his team of fellow educators were successful in persuading many high school dropouts to return to another Jeffco school that might be better–suited to their needs and afford them a fresh start. He retired for the last time, from the school district he loved, when he was 80 years old.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge #1777.

Max is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter Monnie Barrett (Bob) of Lakewood; son David of Minneapolis; grandchildren Alexander, Chloe, and Mia of Lakewood; brothers Doug (Ruth) of Buffalo, WY and Roger (Donna) of Longmont; and several nieces and nephews.

The Max Osborn Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established for those wishing to contribute and may be sent to the attention of: Monnie Barrett, 12680 Willow Lane, Lakewood, CO 80215.
