Mrs. Roy McCarl Struck Down by Car

A tragic automobile accident brought deep sorrow in place of Christmas joy into the home of Roy McCarl and family, who live eleven miles north of Burlington, Colo. Mrs. McCarl, 32, the mother of four children, was struck down and fatally injured by an automobile driven by Daniel Humsberger, 65, of LaJunta, Saturday morning, Dec. 24. The accident happened at 8:20 o’clock on Highway 24 in front of the Phillips "66" service station, at the south end of main street.

Mrs. McCarl, who was killed instantly, had met her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Stahlecker, who with her two young daughters were planning to drive to Denver, at the station. After bidding goodbye to her parents and daughters, she started across the road and stepped directly in the path of the Humsberger machine.

The bumper and left headlight of the car struck her and carried her about 77 feet before the body fell to the ground from the hood of the car. Both legs were broken, her skull fractured, and she also suffered other injuries. The body was taken directly to the mortuary.

Humsberger, who was driving to Hastings to spend Christmas, was travelling at 35 miles an hour when the accident happened. He was detained there for a coroner’s inquest held Tuesday. The verdict of the jury was an "unavoidable accident."

Emma W. McCarl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Stahlecker, was born near Loveland, Colo., Oct 11, 1906, and died Dec. 24, 1938, at the age of 32 years, two months and 13 days.

She was married to LeRoy McCarl July 5, 1924. To this union were born five children, one son having died in infancy. Those left to mourn her death are her husband, four daughters, father, mother, one brother and two sisters.

She had a wide acquaintance and was liked by all. Mrs. McCarl was a kind and loving mother who dearly loved her children. In 1930 she joined the Nazarene church at Farnam, and has been a faithful Christian. She will be greatly missed by her family and all friends.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at the mortuary, with the Rev. Harold Mckellips in charge. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. C. A. Gilbert and Mrs. C. G. Sly, sisters of the deceased, of Denver; Mrs. H. P. Goedel, Otto Stahlecker, Grafton, Nebr., aunt and uncle; Mrs. Stahlecker’s niece, Mrs. Very Klein, Sutton; Mrs. Iva McMichael, sister-in-law of the deceased of Farnam; Mr. McCarl’s niece, Mrs. D. J. Morton and Mr. Morton of Orafino, and his brother-in-law, Clifford McMichael of Orafino.
