Vera L. (Holbein) Glascock Montgomery

Vera Louise Glascock Montgomery, 84, of North Platte died Oct. 3, 1998, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Eustis on March 3, 1914, to Gottlieb Karl and Ida (Luhe) Holbein. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, where she was also active in teaching Sunday school, Bible school and had charge of children's programs.

After graduating from Eustis High School in 1931, she attended Kearney State Teachers College. She taught in rural schools around Eustis. She continued attending summer schools in Chadron, McCook, North Platte and the University of Washington, receiving her teaching degree from Kearney State Teachers College at age 59.

She taught primary grades at Paxton, where she met and married Howard Russell "Brownie" Glascock on May 10, 1941, in North Platte at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. They moved to North Platte shortly after their marriage. They had two children, a daughter, Jacqueline, and a son, Douglas. Her husband preceded her in death on May 5, 1967.

In addition to being active in church work, she also was a Cub Scout den mother.

On Aug. 5, 1982, she married Dale Clifton Montgomery. They spent winters in Arizona and traveled. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1997.

Mrs. Montgomery will be remembered for her decorative writing. She wrote many place-cards for dinners, certificates and in books for organizations. She also designed and made many favors and table centerpieces.

She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and church Circle Lois and DOES Drove 109.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Glascock of San Diego; a stepdaughter, Gwen (Clarence) Beal of Denver; a son, Doug (Susan) Glascock of Dallas; two stepsons, Calvin Montgomery of Tucson, Ariz., and Merlin Montgomery of Lilliwaup, Wash,; a sister, Ann Rueter of Imperial; a sister-in-law, Mildred Holbein of Seattle; five step-grandchildren, Tom, Emily and Annie Montgomery and George and Chris Linker; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen Kugler; and a brother, Fred Holbein.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C and Sycamore with the Rev. Dr. Nathan R. Wadewitz of First Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
