Fred R. Miller

Fred R. Miller, 97, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 1989, at the Gothenburg Hospital. He was born Oct. 4, 1892, at Winigan, Mo. to Alonzo and Mary Brownfield Miller and moved with his parents to Arthur County in 1914.

He worked for area ranches, wrangling horses and herding cattle, until his enlistment in the U. S. Navy in 1918. He served on the battleship Michigan and received his discharge in 1921.

On Feb. 11, 1924, he married Lou Boggs at Julesburg, Colo. They made their home in the rural Lewellen and Arthur areas for six years. In 1930 he became a rural mail carrier in the Lemoyne and Belmar areas. Due to construction of Kingsley Dam, he was transferred to Farnam where he was mail carrier from 1941 until 1962, retiring after 32 years of service.

Mr. Miller was recognized this year by the Farnam American Legion for more than 70 years membership in the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Lou of Farnam; a daughter, Gladys (Mrs. Arthur) Wolf of Farnam; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, three brothers and a sister.

Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. today at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Robert Stevens officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Legion Post 288.

Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
