Gerald Walker

Gerald “Jerry” David Walker, 80, of North Platte, passed away Dec. 21, 2015, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

He was born on July 14, 1935, at Santa Ana, California, to Henry and Ollie Mae (Hooper) Walker. The second of two children, he lived there until the age of 10. He then moved to Cozad with his mother and stepfather. Jerry graduated from Cozad high school in 1954.

He was united in marriage in 1956 to June Lavone Hilton at the United Methodist Church in Cozad. In 1962, the Walker family began with the birth of Michelle Lynn, Monte David and Marsha Sue.

Jerry entered the U.S. Army in 1958. He was stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. In 1960, he transferred to the U.S. Army Corps in Lexington and was honorably discharged in 1964.

Jerry farmed and hayed in the Cozad area until he started working at Wayne’s Shoe Store in Cozad. He later moved to North Platte, where he worked for the Northwestern Gas Company for more than 20 years before his retirement. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a past member of American Legion.

Jerry’s interests included country music, dancing, old cars and his grandchildren. He liked to go to every sporting event his grandsons participated in. Jerry enjoyed bike riding, and reading about Western history and old times.

Jerry was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Gill; parents; and sister, Charlene Duckworth.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 59 years, June, of North Platte; son, Monte (Anissa) Walker, of North Platte; daughter, Marsha (Rick) Nester, of Layton, Utah; six grandchildren, Sam (Mary) Gill and David Gill, all of Phoenix, Brittany Nester, of Layton, Utah, and Colton, Luke and Bryson Walker, all of North Platte; and one niece, Kathy Schroder, of Cozad.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 28, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 28, at the Farnam Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.
