Obituary Collection
Ronald Walter Lewis

Farnam was greatly shocked Saturday evening when the tragic news was received here of the accidental death of Ronald Lewis which occurred that afternoon at Pocatello, Ida. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Lewis, and had lived his entire life this community, except for the last four years that he had been attending the State Normal school at Kearney.

Ronald had achieved honors in the school athletic circles when he was in the Farnam high school and became one of the outstanding stars of college athletics in the state conference, while enrolled at the Kearney Normal.

A young man with a pleasing and winning disposition, who had acquired a huge circle of friends among both the young people and the older ones as well. These friends mourn with the sorrowing family in the loss of this true friend.

The large crowd which attended the funeral services held Tuesday afternoon, and the beautiful banks of flowers contributed, were a tribute to the high esteem which this young man was held in the hearts of friends in the community and among school friends at Kearney. The service was held at the home conducted by Rev. Fred H. Johnson.

The music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Pollard and Mr. and Mrs. Dan McNickle, with Miss Lorraine Reeves accompanying at the piano.

The pallbearers were: Joe Gallager, Kearney; Joe Eliott, Kearney; Glen Bartanek, Tabios; George Shoop, Kearney; John Worneke, Crete; and Gordon Carter, Brady. The honorary pallbearers were: Clark McNickle, Kenneth Hudson, Marvin Pollard, Leon Brouillette, Farnam; Keith Earhart, Bairoil, Wyo.; Leon Castor, Holdrege; Francis Albrecht, Red Cloud; and Dale Schneiber, Ogallala.

Ronald Walter Lewis was born June 7, 1916 at Farnam, Nebraska. He passed away June 4, 1938, at the age of 21 years, 11 months, 28 days.

He passed the grades in high school at Farnam, and attended the Kearney Normal school the past four years. He lettered in athletics at the Kearney Normal and will be missed very much by the young friends he had made, both here and at Kearney for to know him was to love him.

He leaves to mourn, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Lewis, long time residents of Farnam; one sister, Mrs. Max McNickle of Farnam, and many other relatives and friends, both here and elsewhere.

A beautiful tribute to Ronald was written by Howard Baxter, and appeared in the Kearney Hub, as follows:

"Many mourn the passing of Ron Lewis, the victim of a tragic accident which took his life Saturday afternoon near Pocatello, Idaho. Lewis and his teammate in many Kearney State college football wars, John Parilek, were riding a freight train to Tacoma, Washington, where they were to work during the summer. According to word received here both were caught beneath shifting freight. Parilek was slightly injured in the accident.

Many local football fans have thrilled to Ron's long runs while playing with the Kearney State eleven in games at College Field. His dashing play won his all-conference honors in the N. I. A. A. circuit four consecutive years. He was also a three-year track and field letterman. A fine boy with an assuring, pleasing personality, Ron leaves a host of friends and admirers in Kearney and all through the state. The possessor of a rare competitive spirit, he was a true sportsman. His memory will live long."
