W. H. H. Dryden

W. H. H. Dryden Early Resident Here Dies in Ore.

W. H. H. Dryden was born in Bedford County Tennessee, Dec. 25, 1846. His parents moved to Illinois when he was two years old, where he lived until 1881 when he moved to Nebraska, residing at Wahoo, where he was engaged in farming, later moving to Frontier county.

Mr. Dryden was married to Miss Joanna Dierdoff Jan. 1870. To this union seven daughters and one son were born. One daughter preceded him in death.

Mrs. Dryden died April 9, 1923, and soon after Mr. Dryden went to Eugene, Oregon where he made his home until his demise Aug. 25, 1936.

Those left to mourn his departure: Mrs. Lois McHoes, Mrs. Sarah Hiestand and Mrs. Rosalia Balch, Eugene, Oregon; Mrs. Margaret Balch, Norwood, Idaho; Mrs. Elza Uglig, Reed Point, Montana; Mrs. Nancy Hiestand, Billings, Montana and J. H. Dryden, Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Dryden served his country in the Civil War and was affiliated with the G. A. R., taking an active part in that organization.

The remains were brought to Farnam for burial in the Farnam cemetery Wednesday afternoon. A short service was held at the cemetery, with the American Legion assisting.

G.A.R. Veteran Dies Here Tuesday

W. H. H. Dryden, one of the few Civil war veterans remaining in Eugene's active G. A. R. post, died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lois McHoes. He would have been 90 years old, Christmas day of this year.

Mr. Dryden, who served in Company G, 62nd volunteer Illinois infantry, fought at the battles of Little Rock, Blaine's Crossroads, Corinth, Jenkin's Ferry, and others. For a time he was in the 16th corps under command of General Washburne and later in the seventh corps under General Frederick Steele and General J. J. Reynolds, seeing considerable service in Tennessee, Arkansas, and the Indian territory.

Mr. Dryden was born in Bedford county, Tenn., Dec. 25, 1846, one of nine children. He was reared in Illinois and returned to that state following the Civil war.

In 1880 he moved to Nebraska and spent many years in farming in the mid-west. He had been in Eugene 13 years

Surviving are the following son and daughters: Mrs. Lois McHoes of Eugene, Mrs. Sadie Hiestand, of Eugene, Mrs. Nannie Hiestand of Billings, Mont., Mrs. Eliza Uhlig of Reedspoint, Montana, Mrs. Rose Balch, Eugene, Mrs. Margaret Balch of Norwood, Ida., J. H. Dryden of Los Angeles, Cal. There are also 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren surviving.

Mr. Dryden has been a member of the Grand Army of the Republic since 1883. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
