Necessary and needed were the ORGANIZATIONS of Farnam
BOY SCOUTS
In January of 1961, four Farnam boys and their Den Mother, Mrs. Alfred Wear, joined the Cub Scouts of Eustis Pack 244. The boys were Clinton Wear, Gaylord Smallfoot, Gary Hemphill and Douglas Adkisson. They continued under the charter with Eustis as a neighborhood Den because it was necessary to have five boys to have a den in their own area. Pete Mangus furnished the building on the corner south of Frazier’s for the first club scout meeting. The Lions Club furnished the fuel for heating. The pack meetings were held at Eustis until in 1965 when the Cub Scouts and their Den Mother branched out and began their ow^n Pack 253 with the Methodist Church furnishing a meeting place for the Pack. Later the meeting place for the cub scouts was the rear room of the Broken Spoke. From there they moved to the old Barber Shop. It was about this time that Mrs. Alfred Wear resigned her position as Den Mother and it was turned over to the mothers of the boys who were members of the cub scouts. The mothers took turns being the den mother.
Activities related to scouting that the cub scouts participated in were: taking part in the expositions that were held in Holdrege and other towns; selling tickets for prizes and gift certificates; for the expositions, the cub scouts always did well in this for seven years they had the highest average in the district which included towns of McCook to Orleans, and Holdrege to Farnam; having a booth at the school carnival and drawing a good crowd; having an entry in the homecoming parade in which their floats usually placed well; and during Scout Month they always attended church in a body, the boys wore their Cub Scout shirts to school, they had a display in a window downtown, and they had a banquet for their Pack night.
The Boy Scouts have been active in Farnam during various years. The last year that it was held was in 1975. In the late forties and fifties there were Boy Scout groups in Farnam.
