MR. and MRS. A. E. OMAN SURPRISED ON SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

February, 1932

On Friday evening, while Rev. and Mrs. Barton and George, were calling on Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Oman and family, about fifty-two relatives and friends walked in on them with well filled baskets, to help Mr. and Mrs. Oman celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Needless to say they were both pleased and surprised.

A program had been planned which furnished the evening’s entertainment. A mock wedding and songs with guitar accompaniment were given. Those taking part in the mock wedding were as follows: Mrs. Claude Clement with rosy cheeks and red head band, dressed in a yellow dress knee length, played the wedding march on the little Ewing girl’s piano, while the bridal party marched downstairs. Alfred Anderson of Cozad, a cousin of the Oman boys was bride, being dressed in long dress, long white curls, with a lace curtain for a veil. He carried a large bouquet of cedar and colored feathers held together with red rags tied in knots. The veil was carried by Victor Oman, who was dressed in a white dress coming to his knees.

The groom was Mrs. Lester Oman of Gothenburg, she wore the conventional black, with a button hole bouquet of cedar and feathers. They made a charming couple, as the bride was over six foot and the groom about five foot tall.

The other attendants were Lester Oman, dressed in a short bright red dress, and Mrs. Oliver Clement, in a short white dress, with rolled socks, were flower girls, each carried a pail of beans which they threw at the audience.

Otto Oman, with long white curls, long dress and beautiful large yellow hat, was bridesmaid, and Jeanette Parker was best man. She was dressed in a pair of striped trousers, borrowed of Gerald Hicks, a grey shirt, red tie, black swallow tail coat, with about size nine shoes and green hose, her only disappointment was her terribly bowed legs, which caused a great deal of laughter all evening.

Mrs. S. C. Wilcox was ring bearer, carrying the ring (a large note book ring) on a large cushion. She was dressed as a little girl, with short red socks and a short dress.

Mrs. E. L. Ewing was dressed in a long black dress with cream colored.lace sleeves, her hair was done up on the back of her head, and she represented the mother of the bride. Burr Parker dressed in stiff white bosom shirt, white pants, black swallow tail coat, wide blue ribbon tie was father of the bride, who gave her away. The mother cried constantly during the marriage ceremony, which was conducted by Claude Clement as preacher. He was dressed in dark trousers, a long white coat, stovepipe hat, spectacles, black goatee and small mustache. He carried a large Montgomery Ward catalogue, from which the impressive ring ceremony was read.

The bride was very nervous while the ceremony was being performed, as the preacher said in these terrible depressing times what it meant to get married, and how the bride had to promise to support this man to be her lawful wedded pocketbook, boss supervisor and road manager, to furnish him in eats, drinks and gum.

After the ceremony, congratulations were in order. Then Mr. and Mrs. Claude Clement sang several appropriate songs with Mrs. Clement playing the guitar, while some of the ladies were busy, making a scrapbook of pictures of the life of the bride and groom during the past years.

Rev. Barton, then in a few words, presented Mr. and Mrs. Oman with a silver pie, gifts of money from their friends, also a beautiful three sectioned pickle dish in a silver stand.

A delicious lunch of rolls, meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, pickles, fruit salad, angel food cake and coffee were served. At a late hour the guests departed, wishing Mr. and Mrs. Oman many more anniversaries.
