Then there were DISASTERS

OTHER STORMS

A weather related item taken from a June 25th, 1891 paper is: Farmers of Frontier County are saying that weeds are getting ahead of their corn on account of so much wet weather. The listed corn is suffering with surplus of moisture, much worse than the planted fields.

On May 30, 1918, a tornado came through Farnam. A program was in progress in the livery barn that was used as a community building when it was necessary. Members of the audience remember seeing the roof sag and straighten. They also remember that George Ainlay was directing the audience while they were participating in a song. This was his way. to keep them from panicking. The tornado did not destroy th> livery barn, but it did do some damage in other parts of town.

Storm in 1957

In 1962 toronadoes, rain and hail hit Farnam and the surrounding communities, especially south of Farnam.

This is what was left of a big barn on the Irvin Hess farm. The high waters rushed through the south section of town, washing some railroad track and at its crest barely missing low residential homes.

Other damage was fields completely hailed out; two large barns were taken and four windmills were taken on the Jay Rice farm; a brooder house with 200 baby chickens was demolished on the Don Heath farm; telephone service was out; electric lines were in complete chaos and electricians worked the first 36 hours without sleep. The Roger Aden farm was damaged as was the Herb Messersmith farm, Ralph Jurjens farm, Keith Messersmith farm, the Roland Lehman farm and many others.

March 22, 1966
It started snowing in the middle of the morning. It was so wet that it stuck to the windows, so you couldn't see out. The wind blew and it was so bad that you could see but a short distance. The electricity went off about 11:00 A.M. and didn’t come on until afternoon the next day. The roads were closed. The blizzard was hard on the livestock; some were lost because the snow was so wet and heavy.

March 18, 1976
It started sleeting at 4:00. It turned to snow and by 5:30 P.M. a regular blizzard was raging. The snow piled. It was the worst blizzard we had experienced in the area since 1966.

In May of 1980 a tornado touched down on the George Lungrin farm north of Farnam. There was considerable damage at other farms around Farnam, also from this storm.
