HISTORY OF THE BAPTIST CHURCH

The first meeting to organize the First Baptist Church was held September 25, 1890. A council being called by the Baptist Brethren of Farnam and they met on the above date at 8 o’clock P.M. The Council consisted of Rev. E. T. Stinnette, Rev. W. M. Evens and Rev. J. Palmer. Rev. Stinnette was chosen as moderator and Brother Evens as clerk.

Churches represented by the above council were Pleasant Ridge and Pleasant Valley.

Articles of Faith and Church Convenant were publicly read, after reading of scripture, prayer being offered and sermon was delivered by Rev. E. T. Stinnette.

As a result of the meeting a church was organized consisting of nine charter members and recognized by the council as the First Baptist Church of Farnam.

In 1891 our receipts for the first year were: First, $2.25; Second, $1.50; Third $1.00; Fourth, $1.85; Total $6.60, which was paid to Mission Enterprises.

On December 24,1892, another meeting was held. It was decided that there would be a meeting held each sabbath for the purpose of prayers and Bible study. That an effort be made to secure a pastor who can be with us once a month.

After the first year the following persons were to be received into the church by Baptism: Miss Grace Wood, Mr. Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. John Pollard.

On April 23, 1895, the following business was transacted: (1) That we hold a religious meeting as often as every other sabbath. (2) That Miss Ella Kerr was received into the church and given the right hand of fellowship by Brother Byson.

On December 22, 1895 after the evening service it was voted that we receive Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Dillon into the church after Baptism. Mr. Herbert N. Stilley was chosen church clerk.

On December 21, 1896 a meeting of the church was called at 8 P.M. by the Pastor D. L. McBride. Mr. McBride was a circuit minister at that time. He was an old soldier of the Civil War. At this meeting the Incorporation was read and admitted to the church. It was moved and carried that they be adopted as read. At that time we were putting on a building program and we agreed to ask a donation of $150.00 from the church edifice fund of the American Baptist Home Mission Society.

In 1896, Rev. George Divoll came from the east and with money raised among his parishioners in New York, built the Baptist Church.

Some years after the organization and the time of dedication of the church, the people from Antelope Church and the people from Pleasant Ridge at Moorefield organized. Then we called a regular pastor to divide his time with our church and the Antelope Church who was Rev. C. J. Johnson. After that a young man who came from the Seminary, Rev. Thomas Kimball, the first pastor that was ordained in church or meeting at the time by Brother Finley, Dea Lincoln, Rev. Stinnette and Rev. Hill of this church. About 1898 a revival meeting was conducted by Rev. Thomas Kimball and the church received the following members for baptism: Laura Moore, Mrs. Griffith, Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. Herndon were received by the church by letter.

The charter members were Mrs. A. E. Hill, Mrs. Maggie Whitney, Mrs. Mary E. Stilley, Mr. James H. Wood, Mrs. M. C. Divoll, Rose Burrows, Mr. A. E. Hill and Mrs. James H. Wood.

Services were discontinued in 1953 and on May 4, 1961 a business meeting resulted in the opening of the church for services. Rev. Forrest Woodman of Arnold, Nebraska, came on Sunday afternoon and conducted the services. The members of the church and others who had attended their own church in the morning enjoyed the services.

During the year Rev. Woodman was in an accident where he lost his life. The church was then closed for the final time. In 1963 the board of trustees sold the building to Clyde Kotschwar.
